The Penthouse was formed from the 1950’s lateral conversion of 3 separate attics over Belgrave Squares’ 1830’s terraced townhouses. The 3 attics, previously servants’ accommodation, when conjoined provided a warren of small, low ceilinged rooms in the negative spaces of the roof structures, old stairways, service tanks and chimneys stacks. The design challenge was to work within the historic and Listed building constraints to form a modern high ceilinged apartment. The challenge for the construction team was to do this without any disruption to the tenants of the many apartments below. The clients’ functional requirements included providing 4 bedrooms, reception, kitchen and dining area, alongside the need to have an outside space for roof gardens.
