How to Write an Essay in MLA Format

Heading: On your essay’s cover page/first page, on your left-hand upper corner, insert your name, educator’s name, course title, and date. The date format is Day, Month, Year, as in, 3 February 2018.

Essay Title: Your Title must be centered. Do not bold or underline your title. Your title, like the rest of your essay’s text, should be double-spaced. No additional spaces are required.

Page Numbers: Your essay’s pages are numbered in the right upper hand corner of the page. Each page number is preceded by the student’s surname. Select insert menu. Then select Page Number, and then select Top of Page. Select the top right selection (Plain Number Three). Insert your name, followed by five spaces preceding the number. You will need to alter the number and name’s font by returning to the home tab. Double click anywhere below the page number to exit.

Margins: Use one-inch margins.  Margins should not be aligned. Your margins In Word 2007 are checked by selecting Margins from the Page Layout menu. Word 2007’s standard margins are correctly set therefore you need not alter them.

Line Spacing: Your whole document should be double-spaced. No additional/extra spaces should exist between lines.

Indenting: Each paragraph’s opening line should be indented 1/2″. Indenting is done by pressing the tab key once.

Font:  Utilize twelve-point font, Times New Roman

Works Cited: If your essay requires you use sources, compose a ‘Works Cited’ page conveying and listing the works you paraphrased or quoted. Your Works Cited should be on a separate page after you have concluded writing your essay, alternatively put; your Works Cited page is the final page of your essay.

Title Page: For essays, title pages are not required unless requested by your instructor. Adhere to his/her instructions.
